Second Quarter LJP

Activity 1: Prove and Answer

  1. Colonizers often imposed their language, religion, and culture, leading to loss or weakening of native traditions.

This is proven by the fact that a lot of people use western technologies, such as the computer I am using. A lot of people prefer western brands, such as McDonalds or Microsoft.

Do you think it is important to preserve your own culture and identity today? Why or why not?

I think it is still important to preserve our own cultures and identities today. I think so because it shows us a piece of history that, if we didn't preserve, would've never been still known. It makes us unique, with our own stories and histories, making us different, and unique.

  2. Colonized people were often treated as inferior or less civilized.

This statement is proved true when you look back at how they were treated. They were often abused, with them doing services such as polo y servicio, "Cultivation System", etc. They were usually put into separate classes, like "Indios".

How do you think colonized people felt when they treated as inferior?

They, obviously, felt mistreated and disrespected. Most of them were reduced to workers in harsh working and living environments. Then, they realized that they had rights/were supposed to have rights, and revolted.

Activity 2: First and Second Phases of Imperialism

The difference between the first and second phases of imperialism is that the first is more of about expansion, exploration, and settling in. Then, the second phase of imperialism is the industrialization, where they industrialize with western technologies/ideas.

Activity 3: Case Study

A long-term effect of the IMF influencing the country is that they will rely on it. Because, since the developing country needs funds to grow, and the IMF provides those funds under certain conditions, if they break those conditions, they will be cut funding, and the country will crumble. This means that the IMF practically has control on the whole country, because even if they change their conditions, they still must meet the demands, or else their funding will be cut of. This is pretty bad, but what's worse is that if IMF abandons this funding, the developing country will not recieve any funding, even though they haven't broke any of the promises, and they will fall.

Activity 4:

BREAKING: The French's colonization has catastrophic effects!

Here is what we heard from a testimonies:

"Life living under the French rule has been hard. My father's a farmer, he produces the food for the family. When the French arrived, he was forced to plant rubber, coffee, and rice, leaving less for fruits and vegetables we need. Now, my father's struggling to provide for the family. What's worse, we have nothing to sell, because the plants we used to are now gone in favor of the ones the French asks us. We've been scraping by, and he could barely pay for my education. It doesn't make sense, I've been in class, and apparently, there are other lands, with people like us and them, and they aren't like this! They don't have to plant stuff forced by the government, they don't have to do things because of the government at the expense of us!"

- Eav Arun

So, like, this one time, I was walking down the street, and then, randomly, out of nowhere, at the corner of my eye,

If you see this, I formatted it wrong.

Activity 5:

Entry Number 5: Under a New Flag

Dear... journal.
I have big news! Apparently there are new people visiting and... oh.

So, apparently, we have new rulers, I guess? Apparently, some people named "British" found us and now claim to be our ruler, apparently. They're making big renovations to our country, and from what I've heard, they are pretty cool. but I heard that some people don't like it as much. I hope that they're good rulers, because they look like they have cool technology and stuff. But, I'm worried... My parents told me that they're evil, and want to "colonize" us, whatever that means. But, they're my parents, and I heard a lot of people say the same things about abuse. What if they are bad? What if they are trying to abuse us?
Well, I hope not...

Activity 6: Join or Resist?

If I was a Cambodian student during the French rule, I would probably step aside, and just practice the new law. It is much more peaceful than protesting, which will, for a fact, get me killed. It might be safer to just educate myself, instead of resisting against the French. Studying the system might be able to help me, because it tells me what I need to know and what I have to avoid to live a safe life as a Cambodian student.
